Background study for REDD+ implementation: multi-perspective analysis of drivers of deforestation, forest degradation and barriers to REDD+ activities – 2016
SUMMARY:
Social Solutions participated in an interdisciplinary team of sector experts under guidance of UNIQUE forestry and land use, for the multi-perspective analysis of drivers of deforestation, forest degradation and barriers to REDD+ activities (DDFDB+).
NIMOS contracted UNIQUE forestry and land use GmbH to carry out the study: „a multi-perspective analysis of drivers of deforestation, forest degradation and barriers to REDD+ activities (DDFDB+)”. The overall objective of the DDFDB+ study was to identify crucial challenges and main points for improvement related to drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in Suriname, as well as to barriers for sustainable management of forests, conservation of forest carbon stocks and enhancement of forest carbon stocks. The study provides the main background analysis for REDD+ implementation in Suriname.
The mining sector is regarded as amongst the most important drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in Suriname and requires special attention. The specific challenges and barriers to sustainable mining must be understood and elaborated to ensure successful completion of this assignment. Social Solutions was responsible for the mining section of the study.
