SUMMARY:

This report presents a detailed situation analysis and social mapping of mining activities in Brownsberg National Park (BNP). The consultancy was commissioned by WWF Guiana’s as part of its program to support best practices in the extractive sector. Data were collected by: Ground-truthing of GIS/photographic information; survey interviews with mine operators in the BNP; conversations and observations with mining service providers and gold miners; and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders. Field visits were undertaken to all known and encountered small-scale gold mining sites within the BNP boundaries, including Koemboe, Ireneval, Witikreek, Wakibasu and Jabokai.
